Base Gel
Protects the natural nail, improves adhesion, lightly strengthens, and creates a smooth foundation.
Not sure whether you need base gel, gel polish, soft gel, hard gel, or builder gel? This guide explains what each product does, how they work together, and which professional brands we use for manicure and pedicure services at Darlings Beauty Lab. It focuses on salon gel materials rather than air-dry regular nail polish.
Quick comparison
Protects the natural nail, improves adhesion, lightly strengthens, and creates a smooth foundation.
Adds the main color and glossy long-wear finish over a base layer.
Builds stronger structure for thin, flexible, uneven, or easily breaking nails.
Base / Base Gel
Base gel is a protective and strengthening layer applied directly to the natural nail before color gel polish or hard gel. Like other gel materials, it cures in a UV/LED lamp.
Its main purpose is to create reliable adhesion between the natural nail plate and the next product layers, helping the manicure last longer with fewer lifting issues and chips.
At Darlings Beauty Lab, base gel is also used for light nail architecture correction, extra protection from staining pigments, and reinforcement of the free edge. Our base gels are available only in semi-sheer nude and natural tones for a clean "your nails, but better" look.
When appointment time is limited, we may recommend a manicure finished with base gel instead of a full color application. The service price is the same as our gel manicure because it still includes full nail preparation, cuticle work, and application of strengthening product.
Gel Polish / Soft Gel
Gel polish is a colored gel coating that cures in a UV/LED lamp. It gives long-wear color, shine, and a clean finish while staying flexible enough on the nails.
Gel polish is best for clients who want a classic color manicure with a longer-lasting coating. Unlike base gel, gel polish is primarily the color layer. Base gel is applied underneath to protect the natural nail, improve adhesion, and create an even foundation. Gel polish is applied over the base and gives the main color and finish.
Some clients call gel polish soft gel. At Darlings Beauty Lab, when we are talking about colored nail coating, gel polish and soft gel mean the same thing.
Hard Gel / Builder Gel
Hard gel is a stronger, more structural gel used to reinforce, level, and shape natural nails. It cures in a UV/LED lamp and creates a denser, harder protective layer than regular gel polish.
Hard gel is especially helpful for clients with thin, flexible, uneven, or easily breaking nails, and for anyone who prefers a stronger coating.
Unlike gel polish, hard gel is not only a color coating. It can help level the nail surface, strengthen the free edge, restore shape, and support proper nail architecture as the nail grows. It can be used for natural nail reinforcement, leveling, and creating a small amount of length.
Some clients call hard gel builder gel. At Darlings Beauty Lab, hard gel and builder gel mean the same thing.
How to choose
If your nails are healthy and you mainly want color, gel polish is usually enough. If your nails need a natural-looking nude finish with light reinforcement, base gel can be a good option. If your nails are thin, flexible, uneven, or break easily, hard gel may give better structure and support.
Your nail technician can recommend the most suitable material after seeing your natural nails and understanding how you wear your manicure or pedicure day to day.
